Coral Larvae and You

Coral larvae is mostly found in community swimming pools on the Pacific coast, ranging from central California all the way up into Oregon. This teleplanic larvae will usually take on the color of the chlorinated water that makes up its natural habitat.

One should always take care when approaching a strange family of coral swimming pool larvae, primarily because of its defensive mechanism of shooting lightning from its spokes. If you aren’t wearing a lightning resistant hat or sunglasses, the effects of the coral’s defenses could be significant. You might come out of that swimming pool with a much stronger tan that you ever expected.

Once you have befriended the coral, however, it will usually stay loyal and friendly until the end. There are even a handful of reported cases of coral larvae using their lightning against enemies of their friends. In this case, some friendly larvae can be on of the most valuable assets you can have, and certainly the most valuable one that will also fit in your lunch box.
